A mass of couple hundred thousand people, marching in ecstasy, during the day with techno music through the middle of Budapest. All in peace and joy regardless of their sex, gender, age, color, musical and sexual preferences. This scene might look completely utopistic from the perspective of our present, but it actually happened in couple following years in the early 2000s. However, it is not an uncommon thing in the history of humankind that people experience ecstasy, liberty, joy through dance and music in community and in a peaceful way. My project rave2000 picks from all those ecstatic moments of early 2000s party scene.

 

The magical moment of ecstasy: being high and low at the same time, being beautiful and ugly simultaneously, shining up bright and being lost completely – these are the theme of my series rave2000. These moments exist in partly forgotten archives of early 2000s party photos, a unique moment in the early digital photography, which captured these honest and unfiltered moments of people in deep ecstasy, without hiding anything. This is the time when people were not afraid of the camera – which and its flashlight was necessary and welcomed partner of any party of that time.

 

The aim of my working method is to unfold and manifest these raw and wild moments of freedom in various visual ways, while enjoying these moments on my own at the same time. I create paintings and drawings with my technique “Human Printer” giving physical existence to these early digital photos, which only existed in their low-definition, noisy quality on screens. I also recreate scenes with my character Mudboy (which I invented and keep alive together with Márton Emil Tóth). Mudboy is the complete opposite of civilization: it’s an awkward, dirty creature, thus able to carry these raw moments of ecstasy with a hint of dark eroticism.
